What is Food Technology all about?

Food Technology deals with a blend of physical, chemical or microbiological techniques and processes for transforming raw ingredients into food and also other forms in food processing industry.

Food processing refers to converting the raw ingredients into edible components or transforming food into other edible forms. BE/B. Tech in Food Technology is a 4-year program. Food Technology deals with the various chemical processes that food products undergo to make them consumable and ready to market. Food processors typically take clean, harvested crops or butchered animal products and use them to produce attractive, marketable food products with long shelf-life. Similar processes apply to animal feed. You can pursue M. Tech in Food Technology after successful completion of BE/B.Tech.

Though Food Science Food Engineering and Food Technology are very overlapping, there are few subtle differences. I am not going to get into too many details on this.

Career in Food Technology

There is plenty of scope available in food technology.  The key scopes are given below:

  • As organic chemists, food technologist advises on the methods by which the raw materials have to be converted into processed food.
  • As biochemists, they suggest improvements in flavour, texture, storage, and quality.
  • As home economists, they become the expert in dietetics and nutrition and they test the food and recipes according to the directions on the containers.
  • As engineers, they are required for planning, designing, improving and maintaining the processing systems.
  • As research scientists, they carry out experiments regarding improvement in yield, flavour, nutritive value and general acceptability of the packaged food.
  • As managers and accountants, they manage administration and the finances apart from supervising the processing work.

Job Opportunities for Food technology engineers

Government Jobs

Graduates in B.Tech food technology can find jobs in various government organizations, laboratories etc.  Many firms working under the Food Corporation of India recruit graduates in this field. Initially they are recruited as trainees. In the training period itself they can earn salary of Rs. 20,000/- per month. The training period will be generally six months. After initial training they will be promoted to higher grades based on their capabilities. Their salary scale will also increase consequently after the training period. Apart from salaries they are also provided with good benefits also. Graduates in this field can also try for jobs in laboratories where the quality of food products are tested.

Private jobs

Many private sector organizations recruit graduates in B.Tech food technology. Companies like Amul, Cadbury, Britannia, Nestle etc recruit professionals in food technology. Entry level professionals will be given a six months training initially. After completing the training period they will be promoted to higher grades. The candidates can earn upto Rs. 15,000/- per month in the training period itself. The salary will be further increased after the training period based on the position of their job. Need of Food Science and Technology

Food is essential for all forms of life; and humans need food for survival. Like shelter, clothes, education and healthcare, food is also a basic necessity for mankind.

Majority of the food items are biological in origin. The process of harvesting, processing, distribution, storage and preparation is quite complex. Understanding the process, and solving various problems during the whole process, requires broad-based knowledge and training.

Food scientists are responsible for making safe and nutritious food along with innovative packaging, and that also in abundance. Thus, Food Scientists allow us to make the best use of our food resources and minimize waste of resources.

There has been a tremendous evolution of food system worldwide, thanks to food science and technology (read more). Processed food items are more convenient to consume, and more importantly can be more tasty and healthy as well.

Some of the best examples (products) of food science and technology that we come across in our daily life are:

  • Frozen Food
  • Canned Food
  • Snacks & Fast Food (chips, fries, pizza, burger, pasta etc.)

Microwave Meal

  • Ready-To-Eat Meals
  • Bottled and Packaged Milk (long-life, skimmed, semi-skimmed etc.)
  • Baby Food
  • Low Fat Butter
  • Chocolate
  • Yogurt
  • Coffee (Instant and Filter; don’t know the difference yet? Read here)
  • Cereals (including cereal bars)
  • Packaged Juice (Fruit and Vegetable)
  • Aerated Drinks (Cola), Energy Drinks (Gatorade, Red Bull), Beer, Wine and other alcoholic beverages
